Myths and Vegends

True: There sure are lots of stories about Vegemite. [Why not Marmite?]

Vegemite is made using brewer's yeast - which is a little further down the food chain than used hops. What is so special about the Australian dark savoury yeast extract paste adored and relied upon by Aussies worldwide but which remains a pungent mystery to most foreigners?

"I bought a huge jar of Vegemite. I was a little bit upset that I paid money for it - I could have scraped my bong and got that stuff for free" (Arj Barker, USA comedian)

True bronzed Aussies do not fear their jeers - they "all adore our Vegemite that puts a rose in every cheek" and if nobody else likes it there's more for us (oops what a giveaway - oh well, pass the toast and butter).

As for the competition (hah) from Marmite, the legend is they never recovered their market share after the ridicule heaped upon them following the failure of yet another rival brand called Parwill (a play upon their name).

Vegemite has become a little less popular with the true-blue Aussie set since the company was sold to US food giant Kraft, but our local eccentric millionaire Dick Smith is now attempting to formulate a 100% Oz competitor - Ozemite.
